Reverse Engineering – EdgeWise

The concept of Reverse Engineering appears more and more often in the context of design studios. The most important barriers that appear in the design process at present are:

  • time, or rather the lack of it, when creating projects,
  • quality, we all want high-quality designs with a minimum number of errors and collisions,
  • money, a significant decrease in the profitability of projects.

In this context, the entire process of “reverse engineering” can significantly help us save time and money as well as significantly improve the quality of projects.

Nowadays, the projects that we carry out are most often the modernization of existing facilities. In most cases, designing new elements in old infrastructure is very complicated. EdgeWise can make life easier for us.

The process consists in scanning the object with an industrial scanner, then, after receiving the data in the form of a point cloud, it is imported to the EdgeWise program. EdgeWise software uses an internal module to transform the imported point cloud into a 3D model. Depending on your needs, you can receive a tubular model available in AutoCAD Plant 3D, PDMS, or PCF formats, and building objects or steel structures as an Autodesk Revit model.

PIPELINES

EdgeWise has a built-in algorithm to recognize pipes by diameter. If you have a point cloud, it shows the outline of the pipeline. Based on the average distances between points, the program calculates the average and can create a model according to a specific standard (ASME, DIN). It is not possible to perfectly scan an object, there is always some element obscuring the other, and therefore the cloud often has some gaps. It does not mean, however, that it is impossible to make a model out of such a partial undercoat. EdgeWise has many tools at its disposal to help you predict the further course of a pipe route. The created tubular model can be exported to AutoCAD Plant 3D or PDMS programs or a PCF file.

BUILDINGS

EdgeWise has a built-in module for recognizing walls and objects such as doors and windows. If the point cloud is of poor quality and only one window in the building is well presented on it, the appropriate algorithm will find similar point cloud systems and create a window with the same parameters everywhere. The finished building can be exported to Autodesk Revit.

STEEL STRUCTURES

As with other elements, EdgeWise has a module for detecting steel structures. It is enough to find a well-scanned element in the object and the program will find other elements of similar dimensions for us. As in the case of architectural objects, the recipient of the model is Autodesk Revit.
