Automatic Joinery Schedules in Autodesk Revit: A New Add-in with Object Thumbnails Compliant with Polish Standards

Modern design processes require innovative solutions to streamline architects’ and designers’ work. Our latest Revit add-in, enabling automatic generation of joinery schedules (windows and doors) with thumbnails, significantly boosts efficiency by reducing the time needed to prepare documentation compliant with Polish Standards to just a few seconds.

What is the MAT Carpentry Revit Add-in?

This add-in is an additional module that integrates with Revit, providing tools to automate the joinery scheduling process including thumbnails. It is the first automated tool of its kind available to users of Autodesk AEC Collection (AECC), or for those working with both Revit and AutoCAD.

MAT Carpentry Until now, creating a proper schedule/legend with thumbnails of windows and doors was a time-consuming manual process. Even within full-fledged BIM tools like Revit, this task broke the continuity of the technology. Each change to the window or door elements in the project required manual updates of the schedule in the legend, adding or removing drafting views and object data. Despite many requests from Polish users, current Revit technology and its API do not allow for automating this process.

That’s why MAT’s developers and engineers had to think “outside the box”.

How does it work?

The add-in collects joinery data for standard Revit schedules. It then exports thumbnails and data to an AutoCAD table using family-type views. During the thumbnail generation process, the user will be prompted to approve object isolation as many times as there are unique windows or doors in the project. Revit’s API does not permit automating this stage. For small projects, this might mean a few to a dozen clicks, while for large projects, expect dozens to over a hundred.
In the return process, the add-in inserts a DWG file with the completed schedule back into the Revit project as a symbol. This object can be placed on any sheet and scaled via the Properties panel.

Updating the Schedule After Project Changes

Revit limitations and its API do not allow for automatic updates of the schedule. After significant design changes (families/types, quantity of doors and windows, materials, dimensions, or metadata), the schedule must simply be regenerated and inserted onto the relevant sheet. We recommend doing this at the end of each workday.
